Fresenius Kabi Germany supports Queen Silvia Nursing Award the eighth consecutive year

Since its initiation in 2013, Fresenius Kabi Germany has been a supporter of the Queen Silvia Nursing Award. This year, 20-year old nursing student Sarina Bach from Berlin, Germany, won the prestigious award with her idea “3D biography for the senses”.

The inspiration for this approach came directly from real life practice. When taking care for a bed-ridden patient suffering from dementia, Sarina realized that he was very insecure and uneasy. Based on her training she knew that long-term memory is retained longer, so she developed a way to access familiar memories and thus help the patient to feel more confident than before. During an ergotherapeutic session, the team collected pictures and items in collaboration with the patient or his family, which help him to access familiar memories with all senses.

The jury was very impressed by this remarkable idea that combines 3D biography, family support and a memory approach. It is an excellent example how Fresenius Kabi’s philosophy of “caring for life” can be brought to life in daily treatments of critically and chronically ill patients. “We are very proud to support young talents and encourage nursing students to find new ways to improve the care and the life of patients,” explained Dagmar Scherrer from the management of Fresenius Kabi Germany and Head of FresuCare Services. “Passion and commitment as well as creativity are crucial to find better solutions and constantly improve how we can help patients.”

The Queen Silvia Nursing Award was founded in 2013 as a gift to Her Majesty Queen Silvia of Sweden for her 70th birthday. The scholarship supports nursing students in Sweden, Finland, Poland and Germany and is endowed with €6,000. It is the goal of the Queen Silvia Nursing Award to improve the working conditions for nursing staff, patients and their families. The winners are also invited to the Royal Palace in Stockholm, Sweden, to accept the award handed over personally by Queen Silvia.
